So why an air purifier?
Just as it would be nice that the water you drink be clear of various pollutants and chemicals strewn throughout the environment, it would be nice as well if the air you breathe inside your home was likewise free of pollutants, bacteria, viruses, dust mites, odors etc.
Sources of pollution indoors can be from combustion of gas or oil and incorrect venting for gas and oil units, improperly adjusted gas stoves, asbestos insulation, building material particles in the air, cleaning products, “air fresheners”, pesticides from outside, etc. These sources can be made worse with improper ventilation in the home or with high temperatures and humidity.
Symptoms of exposure to these contaminants can be similar to a common cold.
There are varying degrees of sensitivity to the assortment of particles in the air but then the question is as well if these sensitivities don’t increase over time with repeated exposures the same way the harmful effects of smoking pay their price over time.
There are a number of different types of air purifiers at various price ranges and which handle different types of particles in the air.
1. Hepa filters – These are filters originally developed by the Atomic Energy Commission which remove particles from the air down to .3 of a micron which is approximately .00333 the width of a human hair. They don’t remove odors or fumes however.
They generally last from 2 to 5 years and purchasing one with a prefilter is wise to extend the life of the Hepa filter. Hepa air purifiers do not handle odors or gases floating in the air unless they are combined with another method of purification.
2. UV – Ultraviolet Light – These kill the bacteria, viruses, etc. in the air but don’t handle other particles as the Hepa air purifier does.
3. Ionic – These units are actually broken down into 3 types:
a) Electrostatic Precipitator - These give particles needing to be removed from the air a negative charge. Negatively charged particles then pass by positively charged metal which the negative particles adhere to. The metal is then just cleaned off from time to time to get rid of the particles.
b) Negative Ionizer – This unit sends out negative particles which adhere to positively charged particles in the air which then fall to the floor or furniture and need to be vacuumed up, which is a bit of a drawback for these units.
c) Media Charged Filter – This filter is charged so will pick up oppositely charged particles.
The units being referred to here are basically portable units. They can vary in price range roughly from a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of thousand and cover areas from about 300 square feet to about 900 square feet depending on the unit.
Operating costs can vary as well as the need for filter changing varies and the electrical needs to run the units vary. If one is economy minded it is a good idea to look into the operating costs of a unit in addition to the initial payment for the unit.
Some of the names of purifiers are: Oreck air purifier, Hepa, Honeywell air purifier, Air Living Air purifier, Ecoquest and Holmes air purifier.
