Health Benefit of Exercise

It is readily accepted that exercise is good for us but let’s take a real look at why that would be.
Let’s have a look at exactly what health means. There are 2 relevant meanings. The World Book Dictionary says: “not sick, freedom from illness of any kind”. Well that means if you don’t exercise and you are not sick or ill then you have health. One way of looking at it. I don’t know if one never exercises if you would “degenerate into illness”.

The other meaning given is “the general condition of the body or mind”. Now with that definition, exercise definitely contributes to the better condition of the body and improves the general condition.

But how?

1. Oxygenation: The body gets more oxygen to burn food and other uses and definitely muscles need oxygen to operate optimumly. You’ve got to breathe more when you exercise and often you learn how to breathe most effectively as in Pilates.

2. The body is designed to move. It’s got muscles, moveable joints, legs, arms, rotating vertebrae – you name it. What happens to a car if you leave it parked for years and never drive it? It deteriorates. So does your body. Unfortunately life today doesn’t provide the movement it used to. We sit in cars, in front of the TV, in front of the computer – for hours every day – same position. You might as well be a wooden shape for that. You have an engine and moveable parts that are designed to move, so for the best condition – use it.

Walk if it is not too far – get involved in physical activity – structured exercise or sport, but get the body moving. It will get the whole system going – fluids moving more quickly to areas they should be, muscles doing there stuff instead of turning to jelly, oxygen and CO2 getting in and out faster. That is the health benefit of exercise.

And, just to end, I’d like to dispel a myth. The older you get the less exercise you do. Well you may feel like that but the fact of the matter is the older you get the more movement you need to keep everything in working order – otherwise it starts to seize up. So, no – you don’t kill yourself with exercise – you kill yourself without it.

So get up and get moving. Start of with a little bit and build it up. Time to start. Half hour per day should do it. Here is the order for the health benefit of exercise: “Start!”
