How To Gain Flexibility
Flexibility is part and parcel of Pilates so if you have a good instructor and do the exercises as they should be done you will gain flexibility.
So what is flexibility? It refers to range of movement or not that is present in different areas of the body. It allows movement whether to walk freely or to perform acrobatic contortions.
Flexibility has two main players – the joints and the muscles.
For instance the angle of the thigh into the hip socket determines the range of movement available in that area.
Funnily enough movement begets movement so you will not gain flexibility by sitting on your butt all day. You’ve got to move.
You’ve got to show the joints gradually and gently how they can move and how far they can go.
You have to teach the muscles to stretch and how to gain the greatest length. You can’t gain flexibility by contraction and compression. Extension is the key. Some muscles have to support as well as stretch to keep the joints correctly aligned. Some muscles may have become overly tense and tight and need to relax and release.
Flexibility is not something that is gained overnight but if you work at it bit by bit regularly it will come. Even an older body can gain more flexibility than it has.
You may not make a ballerina or an acrobat but if you do Pilates regularly and correctly you will gain flexibility.
