Man Pilates
Let’s face it, Pilates is for you men. Why?
Well, Joseph Pilates was a man. He designed Pilates exercise for himself to start and men. He was a boxer and an acrobat. He was an athletic trainer so let’s get rid of the false data that Pilates is for women only. Not only that his clientele was mostly men. In the mid 1960's 60 to 65% of his clientele were men. His wife Clara did a lot of the teaching being a better teacher.
Pilates can make you strong – like you won’t believe. The thing is it does not build muscle bulk so looks are deceiving.
I’m 5 foot 1 inch, a woman about 112 pounds,I don’t look over muscled and I am Pilates instructor. Last week I walked up to a set of dumbbells and picked them up and put them down slowly no trouble. The company watching were astounded.
Pilates creates strength, flexibility and agility. It enhances athletic performance and moves it to a new level.
Here is what the men have to say:
Jason Kidd (Basketball)
“I immediately discovered how tight I was.” Kidd recalls. “After one session I was energized. From that point on I was convinced it was a great workout.”
For Kidd, Pilates was all about finding the edge. He estimates 30% of his strength and flexibility training comes from Pilates. “Pilates has made me quicker, more explosive” he says.
Rich Dalatri, the Jersey Nets strength coach, has been instrumental in introducing the exercise method to the entire team.
“Pilates is rejuvenating, restorative, invigorating, maybe because it gets the blood flowing through every inch of the muscles. It’s so internal. It puts you in tune with your body. It puts you in a different state.”
Joseph Pilates said, “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference. And in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.
Curt Schilling, the pitcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks says:
”The first three weeks I was really disappointed. I wasn’t sweating, I wasn’t winded, which is what I associate with true exercise. Then in the fourth week I started to understand the Pilates terminology, the idea of working from your center. By the third month I was more powerful and flexible than ever before. And I’d lost 15 pounds.”
Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl offensive guard Ruben Brown says, “I’m a big guy with a gut.” (6 feet 300 pounds) “I’m always battling back strain. Plus I’m 30 years old now. I’m tired of lifting weights, taking the pounding.
My first session (Pilates) shook me up. It shook everything up. It still does. I came out of the season injury-free. I used to feel like crap after practice and games but not since Pilates. I learned how to breathe through my muscles. My posture is better. I can now move fluidly and I increased my bench workouts.”
Who else? Tiger Woods, Rocco Mediate, Rich Beem, Minnesota Timberwolves, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Donovan McNabb, Al Leiter and more.
So what really is man Pilates? There is really no man Pilates or woman Pilates. Just Pilates and it benefits anyone who applies it properly.
I don’t think I have to say more.
