Pilates – Physical Therapy Rehabilitation
With the modern day world of stresses and strains on the body as we use it and abuse it in our daily lives, comes the pay – physical problems.
Long hours humped over a computer desk or the wheel of a car, little walking or movement, plenty of sugar, coffee, empty carbohydrates and chemical water.
Though maybe not so noticeable in the teens and twenties, results of this definitely show up in the thirties and on.
Although the scope of Pilates does not fall into the realm of diet and liquid, good physical operation does go hand in hand with a good diet.
So don’t think you can live on chocolate, donuts and coffee and expect the body to adequately perform in exercise – it won’t – not for long anyway.
Pilates method of exercise is both a prevention and a cure.
The very nature of the exercises are designed to lengthen, stabilize, align joints and strengthen. They work with muscles, balance and correct breathing.
So just by doing the usual Pilates, abnormalities from consistent sitting or bad posture start to be reversed and the body starts to inherently move better. If you also consciously apply principles learned to your Pilates sessions and to your daily activities, results happen faster and often pains, strains and the crick in the neck disappear.
What is not so obvious is the saving of the muscles and joints in the future years. Crippling old age will not arrive.
But what if this body has already gone too far – its got some serious degeneration and pain – eg: degenerating discs in the back or pelvic misalignment or an injury occurred from an accident. What then?
Even then Pilates can step in and in conjunction with a qualified professional effect rapid rehabilitation.
Many exercises lend themselves to this, but even so, clever physical therapists and other professional people with expertise in anatomy have developed Pilates exercises for specific rehabilitation situations. For example, knee rehabilitation, foot, spine, hip and pelvis – you name it.
Many physical therapy rehabilitation specialists are trained in Pilates and also they are Pilates instructors, such as myself who received training in rehabilitation techniques. It is a specialized area of Pilates, but very effective
One such person is my trainer, Marie-Jose Bloom Lawrence, with a degree in anatomy and physiology, who effects rehab for dancers and other alike people at Long Beach Dance Conditioning.
Many unnecessary operations occur due to lack of effective rehab techniques, which if they had been done, the operation along with its pain, drugs and unconsciousness could have been avoided.
Physical therapy rehabilitation works with the body, not bypassing it and it has been proven by actual test that rehabilitation handled the problem where an operation was being advised.
