Pilates Reformer

The Pilates reformer is definitely a Joseph Pilates invention and its name tells you what it does. It’s a pretty fantastic machine.

It reforms muscles, joints, bones – the body.

However this machine is nothing without the exercises designed for it and you need to know how to work it – so really it is an apparatus that goes with an instructor or vice versa. It is not the only apparatus Joseph Pilates used. There are others such as the step barrel, ladder barrel, trapezius table, wunda chair and others.

I have heard it said that Joseph Pilates designed the machine to help make the mat work easier – and it does that . It also takes mat work further which brings me to a point. The Pilates mat work and reformer work are from the same root and tree. Much of the reformer work is adaption of mat work.

The Pilates reformer can give you length in your body you never thought existed.

It’s basic principle is a moveable carriage attached to springs , 2 pulleys of ropes or straps attached to hand or foot straps and a foot bar. This unique combination working together makes for some awesome exercises. How Joseph Pilates worked it all out sometimes amazes me.

Working on a reformer requires you have your basics in. By this is meant: · You know your core and can feel it and operate it at will. (Core link) · You can keep your joints correctly aligned as you work. · You can maintain a neutral spine and pelvis so the body works in balance. · You can breathe correctly. · You have learnt a couple of basic principles to do with working out your legs and upper body. · You have an instructor who is competently certified and knows what they are doing.( Pilates instructor link)

If you use the wrong muscles or are too weak or simply haven’t a clue you can injure yourself.

So you need to do some private lessons covering the above in the form of mat work and introduction to the reformer and safety on it before you join a reformer class. A good studio or instructor will ask you to do this and it can be up to 5 sessions or even more.

Be patient and learn your stuff so that you get the maximum benefit from that machine. To give you an example, I had a client that went straight to a reformer class at some place or other and once she got privates on the machine she said she would never go back to class because she felt she never did the exercises correctly and never knew what they were about and actually got little benefit.
