What really is the difference between street drug addiction and prescription drug addiction?
NOTHING.
Drugs are drugs and if one is addicted then they still exhibit the same dependency and same withdrawl just varying to a degree with the specific drug. An addict can not stop using the drug.
There are circumstances that may make one a risk for this type of problem such as when one has a medical condition that appears to require a pain medication and they start taking that medication and become dependent on it. Or someone who is given a drug for depression and becomes dependent on it rather and confronting and addressing the true
source
of the problem.
Seniors seem to take more of these drugs than others, however this sort of drug use for medical purposes has been increasing most dramatically in the 12 to 25 year old population.
Often started for “legitimate” reasons such as anxiety, headache or back pain these “legitimate” reasons can still lead to death as it has been said that 10 to 20% of drug deaths are from prescribed substances.
